Target Language Skill: expressing future tense verbs

Suggested Objectives:

1. The person will say the phrase "I'm going to" plus an action verb to express what he or she intends to do in the future.
2. The person will say the phrase "you're going to" plus an action verb to express what another person will do in the future.

Teaching Activities:

A. Speaking

1. Model and teach the phrase "I'm going" Explain to the person that when we say "I'm going to do something." it means that we will do it later. Make sure that the person understands the concepts of now and later, or in the future.
2. Know that in the Unity language system, there are two ways to say "I'm going to sleep." You can use I + FROG to say "I'm going", then add the word "to", and then use BED + VERB to say "sleep". You can use I + FROG to say "I'm going" and then use BED + To+VERB to say "to sleep". The second way saves one keystroke. Teach the way that is easier for the person to understand and access. (examples from Unity 84 Sequenced)
3. Ask questions such as "What are you going to do when you get home?" Model an answer if you need to.
4. Ask, "What are you going to do this weekend?" Model and prompt as needed.
5. Play charades.
a. Phase 1 - model the phrase, "I'm going" or "I'm going to" then select a verb. Act out the sentence you just modeled. Have the person do the next one.
b. Phase 2 - say "you're going to ____" and choose a verb for the person to act out. Reverse roles and have the person tell you what you are going to do.

B. Reading

1. Download the teaching materials at the end of this lesson. Read the story. Focus on the lines "I'm going to" and "You're going to".
2. Review the meaning of the other verbs in the target vocabulary if you need to.
3. When you read the story, stop and wait for the person to read the "I'm going" phrases.
4. Read with a focus on other target phrases as needed.

C. Writing

1. Connect the device to a computer with a USB cable or Blue Tooth module. Let the person practice writing the target words into a word document.
2. Read the story again, and have the person write target phrase on the computer.
3. Talk about some future plans that the person may have. Ask the person to write a story about what he or she is going to do.
4. Insert personal photos into a word document. Have the person write about the pictures using the phrase "I'm going to" as a starter.

D. Generalization

1. Encourage the use of all target vocabulary words from this lesson in everyday speech.
2. Use the phrase "I'm going to" with a place name. Model and teach that we can say either an action word or a place name to complete the sentence.
