5. The person will say the word "slept" to indicate a time of sleep that happened in the past.
6. The person will say the word "said" to indicate that someone said something in the past.
7. The person will say the word "yesterday" in reference to the previous day.

Teaching Activities:

A. Speaking

1. First make sure the person knows the meaning of the root words for target vocabulary words, and is able to say them.
2. Explain that adding the "-ed" ending does not always make the word end in "-ed" but it does always make an action word that happened in the past.
3. Make sure the person understands the concept of past actions. Spend some time on time words such as "yesterday, today, now, and then" if needed.
4. Ask the person to help you complete statements such as, "Today I am running to school. Yesterday I ______(ran) to school." "Today I say hi to my friends. Yesterday I ____(said) hi."
5. Describe and model each target word on the device. If possible you may want to act out the words.

B. Reading

1. Download the supplemental material. Use the link at the end of this lesson. Read the story about Tommy and the grasshopper. The blanks are to prompt the child to complete the sentence using the correct irregular past tense verb.
2. If he/she finds this activity to be too easy then remove the word list from the top of the page.
3. If he/she gets an answer wrong, model the correct word. Allow the child to try again.

C. Writing

1. Connect the device to a computer with a USB cable or Blue Tooth module. Let the person practice writing the target words into a word document.
2. Read the story again and let the person write the target words on the computer.
3. Ask the person to write a story about something he or she did. Encourage use of the target words.
4. Illustrate the story with digital photos, if possible. Print out the story to share with others.

D. Generalization

1. Find and say other commonly used past tense verbs such as "saw, came, did, and took". Use the icon tutor to help you find the words.
2. Encourage the person to tell a story about something that happened to him or her in the past.
3. Look for other reading books that have common past tense verbs. Read the books with the person. Stop when you come to a target past tense verb and wait for him or her to say the word.
4. Start a journal so that the person can write about events that have happened.
