Target Vocabulary:

1. don't (or not)
2. no
3. stop

Target Language Skill: one word utterances

Suggested Objectives:

1. The person will say "don't" to negate an action that is not desired.
2. The person will say "not" in to negate action or description.
3. The person will say "stop" to indicate that he or she wants to end and activity or situation.

Teaching Activities:

A. Speaking

1. Give the person something he or she wants, and then act like you want to take it back.
2. Make a sandwich the person likes, and start to put on wrong ingredients (a plastic bug, a toy)
3. Get the person to indicate a choice of a certain item, and then give them the one they did not choose, for example in art class if they ask for a red marker, give them a green one
4. Role play and model the above situations with another person, then with the AAC speaker.
5. Use dolls or puppets to illustrate someone doing something that causes a problem ( breaking something, hitting someone). Model or have the puppet model "don't" or "stop"

B. Reading

1. Co-read a book with repeated use of negative words, for example Are You My Mommy. Stop when you come to a negative word, and let the person say it, then continue reading.
2. Download the supplemental materials at the end of this lesson. Read the books together. Stop when you come to a negative word, and let the person say the word.

C. Writing

1. Connect the device to a computer with a USB cable or Blue Tooth module. Let the person practice writing the target words into a word document.
2. Read a book that includes some of the target words. Let the person write the target words on the computer as you read the book.

D. Generalization

1. Encourage the use of two word phrases. Model the use of "not" with other words, for example "not want" "not help"
2. Model the use of "no" with other words, for example "no more"
3. Model the use of "don't" with other words, for example "don't do" "don't go"
